Shingle, underlayment and flashing are separate decisions
Asphalt shingles are only the visible roof covering. Underlayment, drip edges, valley treatment, ventilation and flashing connections determine how the whole assembly handles water. Ask each bidder to specify products and methods for these components.
A more expensive material does not fix a poor detail where a pipe, wall or valley meets the roof.
Make wind-related claims specific
If a proposal mentions wind resistance, ask for the product name, the applicable manufacturer rating and the fastening requirements needed to achieve it. Avoid treating a marketing claim as a guarantee against storms.
Similarly, discuss how replacements will match nearby surfaces and what the contractor can or cannot promise about color differences.
Review exclusions
Common differences between estimates are decking repairs, removal of prior roof layers, disposal, ventilation work, permits and cleanup. Ask for unit prices or written change-order procedures if hidden damage is discovered.
For a coastal-area home, have the contractor explain any site-specific requirements and confirm them with the permit office.
